Breaking down can be stressful but being prepared makes all the difference. Make sure you have these essential contact numbers saved in your phone before getting behind the wheel - whether you're driving in the UK or across Europe. Here's who you might need to call in the event of a breakdown:
1. Breakdown Provider
The first number you call upon breaking down should be your breakdown assistance provider.
If you are insured with us, whether you have a UK annual or a European single trip breakdown policy, help is only a call away. Our number is +0333 006 8849.
Additionally, you should store your policy number in your phone so you can reference it quickly if you need to.
Accessibility Support
If you are deaf, hard of hearing, or have a speech impairment, and have broken down:
- In the UK, you can text 07537 40489 with your full name, policy number, vehicle registration and the postcode.
- If you have broken down in Europe, you can use the Relay UK app to connect to 01274 845151 or use your textphone to dial +44 151 494 1260.
2. Emergency Services
If there has been an accident, someone is injured, or your vehicle is in a dangerous location, contact emergency services immediately.
In the UK, you should dial 999.
In Europe, you should dial 112. This is valid in most European countries, but double check the correct emergency service telephone number for the country you're heading to before you travel.
3. UK Embassy or Consulate
If you're travelling in Europe and need assistance with lost documents, legal help or if you're involved in a serious incident, the British Embassy or Consulate can provide you with vital support.
For contact details of embassies and consulates, go to www.gov.uk/world and note down the information for your destination country.
4. Hotel or Accommodation
Breaking down could delay your check-in or check-out, and in some cases, may even result in an unexpected overnight stay. Having your accommodation’s contact details saved means you can quickly get in touch to update your plans, rebook if needed, and maintain open communication with your hosts.
5. Taxi
If your vehicle can't be driven and you are far from home, you might need some alternative transport. Save the number of a local taxi firm and download apps like Uber and Bolt in advance so you have a way to get home or to your next stop.
Final Thoughts
Many of these numbers are available online, but breaking down can be a stressful situation, especially in a remote area with limited signal or no access to mobile data or Wi-Fi, and finding contact details in the heat of the moment can be difficult. By saving all the key contacts in your phone ahead of time, you’ll avoid unnecessary delays and ensure you're not scrambling when it matters most. A few minutes of preparation now can make all the difference later - be prepared, not panicked!
